Hafida was born in Algeria and raised in France. Her mother is a belly dancer, too and so Hafida’s way was predestined. Today she is one of France’s leading belly dancers. This year she will come to Germany for the first time to show us and to teach us her very special art.
"THE SECRET IS LIFELONG TRAINING.
NEVER STOP LEARNING!"

Interview with Hafida Chader

by Marcel Bieger

When studying your sites one wonders how you have learned such different styles like Bollywood and Rock 'n' Roll, Hip Hop, Tribal Fusion, and Salsa (not to forget bellydance). When did you learn all these?

Dance is part of my life since childhood. First I had the opportunity to learn ballroom dances such as rock’n roll, tango, waltz, etc. and get a certification. Then I learned jazz, Latin dances (salsa), and Oriental and Indian dances with master teachers. The secret is lifelong training. Never stop learning!

How did you meet bellydance and how did it become your favourite?

Bellydance and oriental music have always been part of my life since my birth, as my mother had been dancing, too. Later, I learned bellydance with master teachers such as Hadia, Yousry Sharif, Raqia Hassan. Bellydance became one of my favorites because it expresses cultural mixing and makes me feel free to combine other dance styles.

So for your personal style you insert all the different genres you have trained?

As said above, I combine the other dance styles with bellydance. Bellydance fusion is important to me. I have my own style because the above mentioned dance styles have left their footprint on me.

Please introduce to us "La Compagnie Hafida Chader".

«La Compagnie Hafida Chader» was founded in 2008. This is a story of friendship and cultural mixing as the dancers are of different origins (French, Tunisian, Moroccan, Congolese, Croatian, Indian, etc.) and have different dance backgrounds (ballet, hip hop, etc.).

We aim at pushing forward bellydance through creativity and open mindedness. We organize festivals, shows and charity events and we regularly perform on stage.

You have your own dance studio in the Rhône-Alpes region, France (not very far away from Lyon). How eager are the French to learn bellydance and how is the bellydance situation in France anyway?

France is a multicultural country with a huge Middle-Eastern community and the French are eager to learn world dances and especially bellydance. Even if the growth of bellydance has slowed down in recent years, it remains popular and many of the most popular and talented bellydancers in the world are French.
What will we see from you on stage at Leyla's?

On stage at Leyla’s I will perform a modern raqs sharqi.

Please go a little bit more into detail about your workshops.

In the 1st workshop I will teach a jazz cabaret oriental fusion which is the result of the influence of other dance styles on me and my perception of dance fusion.

In the 2nd worskshop, I will teach a modern raqs sharqi.

What are your plans for the future?

Next January, we are organizing our third UNICEF charity show with talented dancers and different dance styles.
